Through connections with campus partners, community resources, and support systems, the Campus Social  Worker assists students experiencing challenging situations. Through individualized planning, she encourages success while reducing the impact of stressors. In addition to identifying challenges, the social worker will also provide support options and connect students to resources. Throughout the process of coordinating these resources and managing the student’s success plan, the social worker will follow up with students as necessary.

NJ PUBLIC ASSISTANCE 

NJ Helps 

This site will help to see if you are eligible for food assistance (SNAP), cash assistance (WFNJ/TANF or  WFNJ/GA), and health Insurance (NJ FamilyCare/ Medicaid). From there you can apply for services or learn about additional resources.  

NJ 211 

Assistance with finding social services in your area  (shelters, food, utility assistance, etc). Call 2-1-1 or search on the website. NJ 211 provides live assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Their services are free, confidential, and multilingual. There are several ways to reach them:

NJ FamilyCare  

As of January 1, 2023, children under 19 may now apply for NJ FamilyCare regardless of their immigration status. All other requirements for NJ  FamilyCare still apply. 

New Jersey’s publicly funded health insurance program  - includes CHIP, Medicaid, and Medicaid expansion populations. That means qualified NJ residents of any age may be eligible for free or low-cost healthcare coverage that covers doctor visits, prescriptions, vision, dental care, mental health and substance use services, and even hospitalization.

WorkFirst NJ (WFNJ)

Work First New Jersey (WFNJ) is a government program designed to assist eligible individuals and families in need by providing financial aid and supportive services. The program aims to: Offer monthly cash assistance to meet basic needs. Assist in obtaining child support payments for dependent children. Aid in finding employment and achieving self-sufficiency through job training, education, and work activities. Provide support with childcare, transportation, and other necessary services. Extend additional support for individuals approaching the 60-month limit of cash assistance benefits. Facilitate the transition to employment by maintaining benefits during the first month of employment and gradually phasing them out.

La Casa De Don Pedro

Weatherization Assistance Program 

The Weatherization Assistance Program offers measures for energy conservation and home improvements that help renters and homeowners save on energy costs.

Housing Counseling & Homeownership Program

La Casa de Don Pedro is an agency that is certified by HUD for housing counseling. It is dedicated to providing affordable homeownership opportunities, guiding families through the process, and assisting them in keeping their homes during difficult times.

Immigration Services & Integration 

La Casa de Don Pedro offers immigration services that provide new immigrants with guidance, education, support, and accredited legal assistance for immigration matters. They also assist DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients with application completion and renewal.

Statewide Parent Advocacy Network

The Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) in New Jersey serves as a comprehensive resource for families. SPAN is dedicated to supporting families in becoming effective advocates and collaborators in enhancing the educational, health, and behavioral well-being of children and adolescents.

Catholic Charities 

Catholic Charities provides a wide range of services such as housing, food, disaster relief, and immigration services. Visit their website and reach out to your local chapter for assistance.

City Relief 

They visit the same six locations weekly and provide meals, essentials, hygiene kits, socks, and prayers. Connect individuals with community partners and navigate agencies & government programs. This can mean anything from assisting with paperwork to attending meetings to advocate on an individual’s behalf. Connect them with resources they need like emergency shelters, job programs, detox or drug rehabilitation, or other available programs.

SEU Food Pantry: Mahoney Library, 2nd Floor, Room E 

Campus Food Pantry is a resource for all currently enrolled SEU students. We understand it is important to ensure that all students have access to nutritious foods and necessities. In the Food Pantry, students will be able to select from a menu of items inclusive of proteins, grains, vegetables, toiletries, and more. The pantry has been stocked with the help of organizations such as the  Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Women Fighting  Hunger, Faculty/Staff, Students/Parents, etc.

First Baptist Church provides non-perishable food for college students on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month with a college ID from 10 am -1 pm.

NJ SNAP 

New Jersey’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance  Program, NJ SNAP, provides food assistance to families and individuals with low incomes to help them buy groceries through a benefits card accepted in most food retail stores and some farmer's markets. Eligibility is set by several factors, such as income and resources. You can use SNAP benefits to stretch your food budget and buy nutritious foods that can keep you and your family healthy.

Women, Infant Child (W.I.C.) 

The New Jersey Supplemental Nutrition Program for  Women Infants and Children is commonly known as  WIC. Child Support 

New Jersey Paternity Opportunity Program

The New Jersey Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) is a program under the Department of Human Services and provides paternity establishment outreach, education,  training, guidance, assessment, and technical assistance to birthing hospitals, local registrars, child support offices, community partners, and parents. The program’s focus is to promote voluntary paternity establishment to ensure that children in New Jersey have legal fathers and the financial and emotional support that all children need and deserve. 

POP was created by the State of New Jersey, in response to a federal mandate, to make it easier for parents to acknowledge paternity voluntarily using a simple in-hospital process at the time of birth. Parents can also voluntarily acknowledge paternity after they leave the hospital at the State Office of Vital Statistics and Registry,  their local registrar, or their local child support office. The program also provides information and resources for more complicated paternity issues to unmarried parents and married or recently divorced parents where a third-party biological father is involved.

Adolescent Housing Hub 

The Adolescent Housing Hub (AHH or the Hub) is a real-time database designed to assist youth with placement in a transitional or permanent housing program. The  AHH program is managed by the Office of Adolescent  Services under the Department of Children and Families.  AHH services are available to eligible homeless youth,  youth at risk for homelessness, and youth aging out of the child welfare system, ages 18 – 21 years. Covenant House provides housing and supportive services to youth facing homelessness. 

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher 

The Section 8 Housing Voucher Program assists in making safe and quality housing in the private rental market affordable to low, and very low-income households by reducing housing costs through direct rent subsidy payments to landlords. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban  Development. Section 8 HCV program is based on the premise that housing costs (rent and utilities) should not exceed 30 percent of a household’s income. Assistance is provided to low, and very low-income households and individuals. The statewide program is available to residents of all New Jersey counties. UTILITY ASSISTANCE 

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP) 

The Home Energy Assistance Program helps low-income residents with their heating and cooling bills and makes provisions for emergency heating system services and emergency fuel assistance within the Home Energy  Assistance Program.

Low Income Home Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) 

LIHWAP is a federally funded program designed to help low-income households reduce the balances they have on their residential water and wastewater bills.

Universal Service Fund (USF)
