Social Work

Department of Social Work

The Bachelor in Social Work (BSW) prepares students who want to serve their communities. Courses prepare students for opportunities in generalist social work practice. Generalist social workers help individuals and families access services and reach their full potential. Equally important, generalist social workers advocate for social justice by using inter-personal and analytic skills so they can be effective change agents.

Courses include hands-on activities so students can apply what they are learning to real life situations. During their senior year, students have a rigorous two-days-a-week internship in an approved social service agency. This experience provides a strong background so graduates are well prepared for seeking employment.

Because the program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), graduates are eligible to apply for Advanced Standing to CSWE-accredited Masters of Social Work (MSW) program. With Advanced Standing, students can complete their MSW in one year rather than the traditional two years of study.

Morristown, N.J. (July 15, 2019) – This summer, Saint Elizabeth University's Bachelor's in Social Work (BSW) received accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Receiving this accreditation enables graduates to apply for Advanced Standing to CSWE-accredited Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. Receiving Advanced Standing allows students to complete their MSW in one year of full-time study instead of two years of full-time study.

SEU's BSW degree prepares students to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities to promote individual well-being and to advocate for social justice. A distinguishing feature of the program is the intensive senior year internship where students are placed in a social service agency, hospital, criminal justice setting or school and receive mentoring from a specially trained social worker.

"This important accreditation gives our BSW students a significant advantage when obtaining social service jobs immediately after graduation," says Dr. Louise Murray, MSW, LSW, chair of social work program. "Additionally, those who want to pursue leadership positions in the profession have a head start on their graduate studies since they are eligible to obtain advanced standing in MSW programs up to five years after receiving their degree."
